Passed away peacefully at Gracelands Rest Home, Hastings, on 13 February 2024, aged 89.

Much loved father of Matthew, and Evan, and father-in-law of Deborah, and Päivi . Loving grandfather of Aslak, Alexandra, and Oliver.

Loved brother of John, Alan, Geoff (deceased), and Ellaine (deceased), and brother-in-law of Marlene.

Loved uncle to many nephews and nieces.

A service to celebrate Ted’s life was held at the Cheval Room, Hastings Racecourse, 300 Prospect Road, Hastings, on Tuesday 20 February at 1.00pm, followed by interment at Havelock North Cemetery.

Ted, its been lovely to join the celebration of your life, albeit online. To see the schoolboy, the athlete, the father, the grandfather, the friend, the lover of music and books, of wildlife and the wild and, how we met, the pursuit of the finest game on the planet - bridge.

Was it 2012 when ted first came to Thames for his "winter holiday" and games of bridge? Up until then Ted visited a different town each June but there was something about Thames that Ted liked and so he joined the club and came back for 3 or 4 weeks every winter until 2023.

Ted drove his old Volvo up from Hastings and stayed in a local motorcamp - I suspect neither was warm nor even comfortable - I know the motorcamp wasn't. When he wasn't playing bridge he could be seen in the library or at a local cafe, reading a newspaper or exploring the latest bridge bidding theory. He loved a yarn about bridge or many other things - he was widely read and highly curious.

Ted and I last played bridge together June 22nd 2023. We scored 71% Anyone who knows will tell you that's a fantastic score. Well done Ted - you always were a winner! Thank you for all you brought to my life and to us at the Thames Bridge Club.

It is always hard to say goodbye to someone who has lived a long and fulfilling life, but we can take comfort in knowing that they have left behind a legacy of wisdom and memories that will live in our hearts. We are very sorry to hear about your loss.

The members of the Thames Bridge Club are very sad to hear of Ted's passing.
We have really enjoyed his presence in our Club over many years. His visits were always much appreciated, and his friendly demeanour, competitive spirit and unfailing cheerfulness will be really missed.
He was one of our game's real gentlemen.
Sadly missed by us all.

Such sad news. Ted was a lovely friend and a dedicated bridge player and mentor. I shall miss our annual game in June.
