At the age of 93, our much loved and respected Dad and grandfather is back with Mum, Mabel, at last. We will remember his smile, his sense of humour and his genuine commitment to his family and to his community.
Jim was the best Dad to Terry and Sue, Kerryn and Alister, Murray and Karen; Yer Yer to David, Anna and Frank, Victoria and Tom, Bella and Keegan, Jamie, and Jacob; “Gung” to Sam and Donna, Toby and Tessa, Kate and Daryl; and Tai Goong to Hazel.
We are truly grateful to Dad’s other family at Taradale Masonic, his home for the past 3 1/2 years.
A private family gathering and cremation has been held. We welcome family and friends to join us at 1.30pm on Saturday 10 February 2024 at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Tennyson Street, Napier to honour and remember Jim. Please bring a donation of non-perishable food that will be passed on to local foodbanks, so that Jim can nourish the community one last time.

  Jim was born in Waipukurau and began his school years at Waipukurau Primary School before moving to Napier. Much loved brother of Jessie, Charlie, Jane, Mary (all deceased) and Nellie.

Arie and Viv send thoughts of comfort to the direct families for this sad loss.
We have some wonderful and fond memories of both Uncle Jim and Aunty Mabel. Their warmth and hospitality stands out the most, as they used to invite my parents Rosie (Mabel’s sister) and Dr Jack Fraser, and all of us 5 kids to stay
(well more like invade) in your Taradale family home. Yessss that’s the whole 7 of us Fraser’s shattering your peace and space! Thank you Terry, Kerryn and Murray for being so tolerant in embracing us with open arms!

We experienced our first-ever earthquake in your Taradale home and I can still recall the clip clop of horses hooves as bottled milk got delivered early in the morning.

Mabel cooked up a storm in the kitchen every day and night whilst Jim was always outside tending to the veg garden out the back or in the sheds. Forever helping others. He lived in his shorts and was so tanned, fit and capable.
His dedication to his family, business and community is exemplary.

Jim and Nell graced us with their presence at Arie and my Auckland wedding in 2011.
They; and most of our Napier cousins attended. How extra special was this occasion…due to them all being there.
Some of these cousins were also present at Rosie and Jack’s wedding in 1962!
How awesome is that!
Recently, before covid lockdowns-Arie and I caught up with Jim and Nell in Napier. That was so special. Nell drove and collected Jim and we met around the corner from his Masonic care home, at a nearby cafe. Arie is a cucumber grower of 38 years and he and Jim shared heart to heart: grower to grower stories for hours. Between them was over 90 years of grower knowledge!
Jim was so astute and their conversation so animated; recounting past practices and present changes… and musing that some things never change. What a wonderful time this was. Arie and he just bonded like two peas in a pod!

We know that Jim blessed many with his sparkling smile and helpful hands.
We will all miss Jim and Mabel’s love. The kind of love that flowed out of them; to others.

Dear Terry, Kerryn & Murray, Nell and families

We are deeply saddened by the passing of your beloved Dad, brother, uncle and grandfather Jim.
At the same time we are thankful for a life that was lived so graciously and fully for his family, relatives, friends and society.

When Rosie and I were working at Napier Hospital in the 1960’s, we were invited to many delectable dinners at your family home in Taradale.
It was a pleasant change from the standard Hospital food. Jim and Mabel put tender loving care into the preparations of the many delicious meals.

Then Rosie and I moved to Auckland; and in our many trips to Napier, the fine hospitality continued with all 7 of us in my family being put up.
This was a magnanoumous gesture and no easy feat to house and feed us all!

In return we could only offer you our humble caravan accommodation when you visited us!

I was deeply impressed by Jim’s industry.
He was a stalwart as a primary producer, supplying fresh produce to the local communities, as well as the national markets.

I respected Jim’s long membership of the Masonic Order and its charitable endeavours.
This was a privilege that Jim enjoyed and a moral code that he upheld.

Jim has also lived so courageously after losing his wife /your dear mum Mabel …
so many decades ago.

So in closing:
Brother Jim (like Philip, and Daisy, Mabel, Ron, Robert and June, Rosie and Winston)…may you

I remember my childhood with Uncle Jim and Aunty Mabel...
A childhood of full of many safe, happy, fun-loving times… bathed in warm hospitality and impeccable role modelling from both of them.
I have many favourite memories ?? of summer and winter school holidays in your family home and in the community of Napier.

Forever caring kind and considerate to all.
 
Forever smart and working industriously.
 
You were a charitable Gentleman....

What a success you and Mabel were!
 
Thank you Uncle Jim and Aunty Mabel for the impressionable moments of love and care that flooded our childhood.
Time with you both has helped shape me to what I am today.
 
Our memories / and my memories stay with each and every one of us.
Then it will be our turn to pass away from this earth .....returning back to the source. Reuniting with our /the Creator of All.

My deepest sympathy to Jim’s immediate and extended family. The Lum Jacks, as they were known, were an extremely well thought of family in Waipukurau during the 1940’s. The children were all academically bright and well liked by their peers. Jim was always a gentleman and a very friendly person. He will be greatly missed by you all.

To the Lum whanau, Sorry to read of the recent passing of your dad and grand father. Driving past your family home almost daily I often think back to my school years and how gentle and humble your parents were. They were great examples and role models for parents who gave their time and love to raise a beautiful family and give to the community. My thoughts are with you all. Kia kaha, Bill
