On June 30, 2014, at Hawkes Bay Regional Hospital. Aged 91 Years.

Dearly Loved husband of the late Shirley, Loved father and father in law of Peter and Maryanne, and John. Treasured grandfather of Christopher, Nicole and Hannah.

A service to remember Alan and give thanks for his life was held at St. Pauls Presbyterian Church, Tennyson Street, Napier on Thursday July 3, 2014.

In lieu of flowers a donation to The Red Cross Society may be posted to 35 Cadbury Road, Napier.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of Alan. My mother Shirley Carey (nee Boardman) often took me around to see Alan & Shirley over the years for a cup of tea when I returned to Napier. They loved to reminisce over their childhood years growing up in Waghorne St. Alan was kind enough to conduct the service when Mum passed away, for which we were grateful.

I’m so sorry I cannot get to Napier for your funeral. I would dearly have loved to share in the celebration of your life. I am just so grateful, however, that I was a part of your wonderful life. It certainly has been my privilege to know you.
Alan, I always looked up to you as a mentor, a good and kind role model and family friend who was always willing to go out of your way to help. One such example was when I was a poor student, you kindly (and bravely) offered me a summer holiday job painting your house. You taught me how to prep the wood, what paint to use and how to apply it. You were so patient when, in my first attempts, I layered the paint onto your window frames so thickly that we had to redo the job. You also, very kindly, took me under your wing in my final year at high school. During my stay, I remember fondly your quirky sayings such as “Have you flushed your fangs?” and “parsley is ghastly.” Everytime I see parsley now your words come into my head! During my stay, you also frequently quizzed me on my knowledge of Donald Bradman, such was your love for the game of cricket and your hero Bradman.
Alan, you meant such a lot to me and to my family. You were a wonderful friend and a steadfast support. We will miss you so much.
